Review Your Vision!
I love this time of year. I love the time to think and plan and reassess accomplishments, opportunities, and challenges. Though we hammered out our 2012 strategic plan for SPEAK! in late October, really digging into the vision for my personal life, my relationships and our business has been top of mind these last few weeks.
Troy Hazard, one of our most in-demand speakers (and one by the way who has earned four consecutive standing ovations on our last four engagements) has a brilliant and I think, elegantly simple process for digging in and clarifying personal and professional vision – our ‘why’ for everything we do in our lives.
In Troy’s bestselling book, Future-Proofing Your Business, he makes it clear…
“If, as individuals, we don’t know what we want to be when we grow up, then we have absolutely no chance of being able to lead others to a similar place for themselves.”
Here’s a recap of Troy’s

simple three step process to Future-Proof Your Business and make sure you really do understand the value of vision:
Action One
Write your own personal vision. Without this, you will never know where you are going or what you want to be when you grow up. Take your time to do this. It’s not an easy process and I want you to consider each and every answer to the questions you ask yourself.
Action Two
Get your team to write up their personal visions as well. Encourage this by sharing yours with them first. The more open you are with them the more they will be with you, and the greater opportunity you both have to share visions and understand your respective futures.
Action Three
Review your own and your teams’ personal visions annually. This is not something you do once. Once done, seek to match those collective personal visions to your business plan and vision and lay this out for all to see so you can all be clear you are aligned.
Our vision is the foundation for everything else. Without this, we easily become hamsters on a wheel, working as hard as we can and as fast as we can without ever having the sense of accomplishment and deep satisfaction that comes from knowing we are going precisely where we intended to go in our lives and helping those around us do the same.
Our next installment will drill down into Troy's process and the pointy questions we all need to be asking ourselves that will help us identify just exactly what our own personal vision looks like.
